About Me

DaveDavid Croft is the proud stay-at-home father of two boys with classic autism. He is a blogger, armchair policy wonk and neurodiversity activist who self-identifies as having Asperger’s Syndrome, a mild form of autism.  David spent his junior high years living on McNutt’s Island on the South Shore of Nova Scotia where his father was the last lighthouse keeper. He went to high school at Park View Education Centre in Bridgewater.  He hitchhiked across the country twice before settling down with his wife of 12 years, Charlene. David has spent much of his adult life in the second hand book trade.

David began a political science degree at Mount Saint Vincent University in 2004.  In 2006, he decided to forgo his academic pursuit due to a mounting number of domestic pressures including a lack of financial resources.  He became a stay-at-home father while Charlene, who was further into her studies, completed her degree and begin her career as an activist researcher.  David excelled in his academic program, and won the respect and admiration of many of his professors and peers for his sharp, keen political sense.

David has always been a staunch political advocate for his sons.  His passion and critical understanding has often been recognized by politicians and professionals as he interacts with them about autism support and programs.  In 2004, he was invited by Jane Kordy to discuss issues of mental health service delivery to inform the Kirby Reports on Mental Health.  He has written and interacted with many of his local MLAs and MPs, some of which are documented on his blog, Tangents.  David is one of the authors behind Blogging Autism, a blog he maintains with Charlene about life on the Autism Spectrum.  He sat on a panel for a Cafe Scientifique on Autism and Gender, in October 2008. In the winter of 2009, he and his family was featured in Halifax Magazine in an article that challenged its readers to think differently about Autism.  David is currently active within The Society Artists for Autism, and with the opening of the Harbourside Market in Dartmouth, he will happily resume a passion as a weekend second hand book trader.

David lives in the heart of Dartmouth South-Portland Valley.  His portfolio interests include education, trade, tourism, justice, and mental health. He has keen interest in electoral reform and charter rights and individual freedoms.  He has usually spent elections sniping from the sidelines, but decided to run for the Green Party to give people in his riding the opportunity to vote for an alternative way of doing politics.
